Construction Supervision of 5 civil works contracts : Double Bituminous Surface Dressing ( DBSD) of 2 packages Trongsa ~ Kuenrapton (23km) and Tintibi ~ Tamala (33km), Asphalt Concrete work from Tamala ~ Gelephu (20km), 40km New Alignment Road with bituminous wearing coarse and new construction of two steel bridges at Yeshigang and Wangdigang rivers under Gelephu ~ Trongsa National Highway Strengthning Project. As Highway Engineer (Jorpati - Sundarijal Site In-charge), major responsibilities include:
Design Phase:
 Design of L-profile and cross-sections of the road, culverts, causeway, drain, retaining wall, 14m span of RCC Bridge with Open Foundation & 19m span of RCC Bridge with Well Foundation etc required in Audit access Road – 001 (Sindhu-15.62 km, Gyalthum- 4.24 km and Sundarijal – 1.69 km) under Melamchi Diversion Scheme.

Project : East-West Highway and Biratnagar Rangeli Road Bridge Upgrading & Maintenance Project (Construction of New Bridges), DoR/DFID, DFID funded. Approximate cost of the Bridges Works was US$6.0 million.

Responsible for construction supervision and quality control of Bridges approach roads at Jharai and Kawasoti rivers on Butwal-Narayanghat sector of the East-West Highway. The construction work included two double lane RCC bridges (each 100 m length) – simply supported and continuous girder type; approach roads (about 0.7 km) with DBST surfacing and river training/ bridge protection works. Approximate cost of two bridge works was US$3.0 million and executed by two ICB contractors. Carried out supervision functions both as Resident Engineer and Material Engineer. Details of job responsibilities were:
• Construction supervision of bridge, approach roads and bridge protection work.
• Quality control of construction materials and workmanship as per the specification
• Conduct and supervise laboratory tests for quality control of materials and construction works.
• Setting up, operation and management of Site Laboratory.
• Site design work including preparation of design drawings.
• Pilot pile Testing under working load before commencing working pile for Biratnagar – Rangeli Road Bridges.
• Mobilization and management of site staff (i.e., Inspector of Works and Sr. Material Technician).
• Assist Construction Manager (Chief Resident Engineer) in planning, supervision and quality control of construction works.

Project : East-West Highway and Biratnagar Rangeli Road Bridge Upgrading & Maintenance Project (Design of new Bridges) DoR/DFID, DFID funded. Approximate cost of the Bridges Works (For Design and Construction) was NRs.400 million.

This was the first bridge project in Nepali road sector aimed at strengthening the DoR's capacity to manage the bridge assets on SRN and enhance private sector skills to provide bridge design, construction and maintenance services. A major component of the project consisted of design and construction of 5 multi-span bridges and 6 multi-cell culverts along East-West Highway and Biratnagar-Rangeli Road and maintenance of 30 bridges located on the SRN. Detail of job responsibilities was:
• Design of two RCC Bridges (Cheka – 40 m and Chisang – 75 m), 20 and 25 m span T-Beam deck simply supported under dead load and continuous under live load.
• Survey Data checking at site with Mr. Tim Steef (Structural Specialist) in Narayanghat Butwal Sector.
• Independently did the following design works using AASHTO 15th edition codes under the supervision of Structural Specialist (Mr. Tim Stiff)
- Design of two 20 metre and three 25 metre span T-Beam deck Simplysupported under dead load and continuous under live load.
- Design of the spill through abutments including determination of foundation loading.
- Design of pier intermediate supports including determination of foundation loading.
- Design of 25 m length bored coast in situ piled foundation.
- Design of two twin cell culverts 2.5 m and 3 m spans and 3.1 m and 4 m height.
- Preparation of sketches for the drafting of the construction drawings.
- Preparation of the measure for the Tender Bills of Quantities.

12.7 September 1997 --- TO August 1998 (12 Months)

Employer : GEOCE Consultants (P) Ltd. Nepal.

Position held : Acting Resident Engineer (1 Year Project)

Project : Package 4: Upgrading of Attaria – Chaudhar Road (ch 12+260 to ch 48+570), First Year Periodic Maintenance Program, Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project, DoR/WB, Approximate cost of the Rehabilitation Works was NRs.140 million and executed by an ICB Contractor. The Role of SMEC was our Technical Advisor

First Year Periodic Maintenance Program of RMRP included 3 roads – periodic maintenance of Hetauda to Narayanghat (75 km) and Tansen – Ridi (11 k m), and rehabilitation of 26 km Ataria-Chaudhar section of EWH. The rehabilitation works for this section of East-West Highway included pavement rehabilitation / reconstruction with subbase, crushed stone base and DBST surfacing for widening to double lane with 7.5 m carriageway; drainage improvement comprising side drains, rehabilitation/ maintenance of existing culverts, new culverts; minor road junctions and traffic safety measures. The cost of upgrading works was about 139 million and executed under ICB contract. Discharged the functions of Construction Supervision and Quality Control and was responsible for construction supervision and quality control of road rehabilitation works. Details of tasks performed were design review and design of site works, check survey including re-establishment of survey monuments. Construction supervision of above rehabilitation works including DBST pavement; quality control operation to maintain proper quality of work as per the specifications, production control of crushed stone base materials, conduct and supervise laboratory and site tests for quality control of materials and works, supervise and monitor Site Laboratory and staff, checking and verification of contract bills (i.e. IPCs); assist Team Leader/ CRE in progress monitoring and contract administration; monitoring quantities of work and updating cash-flow projection and reporting.


12.8 September 1996 --- TO August 1997 (12 Months)

Employer : GEOCE Consultants (P) Ltd. Nepal.

Position held : Assistant Resident Engineer (1 Year Project)

Project : Package 1 : Hetauda to Lothar (ch 0+000 to ch 41+000); Package 2: Lothar – Narayanghat (ch.41+000 to ch. 75+000) Road, First Year Periodic Maintenance Program, Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project, DoR/ WB Approximate cost of the Rehabilitation Works was NRs.87 million and executed by two LCB Contractors . The Role of SMEC was our Technical Advisor

The periodic maintenance of Hetauda-Narayanghat (74.7 km) sector of East-West Highway comprised resealing with DBST including pre-treatment of existing pavement with slurry seal, patch repair, base reinstatement, regulating etc. and spot rehabilitation/ strengthening of pavement; drainage improvement consisting of masonry side drains, slope drainage, rehabilitation/ maintenance of culverts; main side road junctions; slope stabilization/ protection work etc. These works were carried out in two NCB contract packages – Package 1: Hetauda to Lothar (ch 0+000 to ch 41+000) and Package 2 : Lothar to Narayanghat (ch 41 +000 to ch 74+700) and total cost of road maintenance works was about NRs. 87 million. Main responsibilities were reassessment of pavement and other road maintenance works by doing visual survey and road inventory survey, review of design and quantities of construction works and update BOQ; construction supervision and quality control of pavement resealing (DBST) and other maintenance works as above; quantity check and verification of Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs); monitoring of work qualities; assist Team Leader/ CRE in contract administration, progress reporting and other related matters.

12.9 November 1995 --- TO August 1996 (10 months)

Position held : Highway Design Engineer

Project : Pilot Labour Based District Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project (PLRP), MOLD/ WB and First Year Periodic Maintenance Program, Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project, DoR/ WB.

Survey and design for upgrading of Manigram-Rohini Road (7 km) under Model Road Component of PLRP. The upgrading works consisted of improvement of road formation, box culverts, side drains and graveling.

Survey and design of pavement with crushed stone base and DBST surfacing, drainage improvement and road traffic safety measures for upgrading of 16 km, Kothi-Taulihawa section of Lumbini – Taulihawa Road under First Year Periodic Maintenance Program, Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project.

12.10 December 1993 --- TO October 1995 (23 months)

Position held : Deputy Project Manager / Quality Assurance Engineer

Project : Contract I 2, East – West Highway, 218 km to 366 km (Chauharwa to Pathlaiya), Second Road Improvement Highway Project – Road Improvement and Maintenance Components, DoR/ ADB. Approximate cost of the Rehabilitation Works was NRs.830 million.

The contract I2 included construction of road improvement works from 218 km to 267 km Chauharwa – Dhalkebar, 49 km) and periodic maintenance between 267 km and 366 km (Dhalkebar – Pathlaiya, 99 km). The main road improvement and periodic maintenance works were pavement reconstruction/ overlay with crushed stone base and DBST, drainage improvement/ maintenance, river training and bridge protection works. The works were executed under ICB contract of about NRs 320 million. Responsibilities were quality control of road materials and construction. Main functions performed were design of cold and hot mixes, determination of binder and chippings application rater for DBST; supervision of pavement maintenance works that included pre-treatment such as base reinstatement, slurry seal, pot-hole repair by cold and hot mixes and DBST; conduct laboratory and field testing of road materials and works; and quality control in subgrade preparation, laying of subbase and crushed stone base course, granular overlay and surfacing with DBST; preparation of material test reports and assistance to overall quality assurance.

12.11 January 1992 --- TO November 1993 (23 months)

Position held : Road and Bridge Engineer (Design and Construction Supervision)

Project : Bhainse to Kulekhani Road and Bridges Rehabilitation, Kulekhani Disaster Prevention Project, JICA. Approximate cost of the Projects Works was NRs.240 million and executed by ICB contract.

Responsible for design and construction supervision of road rehabilitation works comprising Asphalt Concrete Pavement with crushed stone base course, side drains, culverts and landslide protection and Three Bridges (49 m composite bridge and two bailey bridges of span 75 m and 85 m) on 23 km long Bhainse – Kulekhani Road. The construction cost of the project works was about NRs. 240 million and executed by ICB contract.
